As Managing Director of Touchstone Renard, (and formerly Austin Hall Management Consultants) Phil has worked in Management Consultancy since 1988, leading projects as Principal Consultant and Project Director for many National and International Clients.

Phil's operational responsibilities include strategic planning, marketing, sales, and overall management and administration of the business.

He has particular expertise in the areas of Quality Reviews and Improvement, Project Management, Strategic Reviews, Risk management, Safety Management, Project Assurance and effective Change Implementation and has maintained his academic ties with several UK and overseas business schools.

Having achieved an MBA from Henley Management College, Phil lectures in Project Management and Quality Management on MBA programmes as a visiting tutor.

He has developed a project management course for an MBA programme for Surrey European Management School and has taught project and quality management at a range of UK business schools, including Middlesex Business School, Southampton University Management School and South Bank University.

Phil has also taught project management overseas in locations that include Hong Kong, Singapore, Greece, the West Indies, Mauritius and the Seychelles.

Phil is often invited to speak at conferences and events and recently delivered a presentation as Keynote Speaker at a major overseas international conference on Quality Improvement. As a member of the Court of Brunel University, Phil also takes a keen interest in the University’s activities - particularly the engineering design and entrepreneurial achievements of the students - and speaks at some events.

As an expert in the field of Quality systems, Phil has helped to develop ISO 9000 training videos for The Sunday Times (Business Skills).

Recent Assignments

Phil has been engaged on many private and public sector assignments, including a range of high profile projects for international groups, for example:

  • Programme Director for a series of high profile safety assurance assignments, deploying two teams of Touchstone Renard’s specialist consultants in respect of a major redevelopment of an area of West London by a major construction client. The scheme involved the largest retail shopping complex in Europe, the relocation of metro stations and the development of a new station, office and entertainment facilities and associated infrastructure.
  • Project Director for a major railway safety programme for an overseas national railway organisation.
  • Programme manager of a commission to deliver outstanding improvements to the secure facilities management division (1000 staff) within a UK central government agency.
  • Director of a project diagnosis assignment for the European Commission in respect of a 7 billion Euro funding package for the Greek national railway.
  • A confidential consultancy assignment for a leading UK airline.
  • Project Director for a strategic review of an internal business service for an international pharmaceuticals giant.
  • A large scale ISO 9000 implementation at an MOD operation involving four major sites affecting over 5,000 professional and Technical staff.
  • A variety of marketing reviews for central government offices and business services.
  • Project Director for many of Touchstone Renard’s other large, high profile assignments, including a wide range of rail infrastructure project management and assurance projects Industry & Operational Experience:

Prior to forming Austin Hall Management Consultants, Phil was the General Manager of an international scientific and process equipment company where he was instrumental in revitalising the company and leading the divestment from a major pharmaceutical group.

He has also held senior management positions within:

  • Redland plc.
  • Four Square Division of Mars, and ...
  • GEC Avery.

In his roles at all three organisations, Phil was responsible for product development across each group, leading the development and launch of many crucial new products that were and still are associated with these household names.
