Investment in Information Technology SystemsBy Andy JosolyneInvestment in information technology systems - treat ROI with caution, and ignore the human and implementation issues at your peril. Can the investment in information technology (IT) systems deliver genuine business benefits? How do you measure the business value to ensure that they actually deliver the benefits promised? As the sophistication of systems grows, so they produce fewer tangible and more intangible benefits. By definition there is no solid method for pricing intangible benefits. Organisations could lose important opportunities if they only use financial criteria for determining IT benefits. However organisations could make very poor investment decisions if they overestimate intangible benefits. A very high percentage of systems fail to deliver benefits, because the organisation failed to correctly assess the business value, or failed to manage the organisational change process surrounding the introduction of new technology. This paper explores the challenges of using return on investment (ROI) as an investment method, some of the problems that can contribute to IT systems failure, and the need for an implementation strategy. 143.84 Kb Download Now (as PDF) 136 Kb Download Now (as WinZip file) :: Top of page ::
Business IntelligenceAt no time in the past have organisations gathered and stored such vast amounts of customer information and operational data flowing from multiple sources at increasing speed. More and more organisations have realised that Business Intelligence (BI) offers the opportunity to derive value from the enormous quantities of data in their computer systems. BI offers deeper understanding of customer and partner relationships and key performance indicators while achieving a consistent view across the organisation - insights that deliver more profit, increase organisations’ agility and, by providing an accurate view of an organisation to all its employees, better accountability. 101.09 Kb Download Now (as PDF) 87 Kb Download Now (as WinZip file) :: Top of page ::

When an organisation presents its ISO 9001:2000 certification, the buyer can be assured that the quality of the purchase will meet his expectations. It is thus easier and safer to buy from certified organisations. The year 2000 revision focused on quality objectives, continual improvement and building customer satisfaction. So, the supplier becomes customer focused, assuring customers’ needs and expectations are met. The Standard applies across the board for organisations of any size or sector type. 144.07 Kb Download Now (as PDF) 132 Kb Download Now (as WinZip file) :: Top of page ::
Domestic Boilers - Complying With LegislationGas is certainly dangerous stuff! Councils and Registered Social Landlords need to show that they have robust systems for managing gas servicing, repairs, and hazardous situations, whether they use external contractors or in-house resources. Many Councils and Registered Social Landlords have difficulty in fully complying with the requirement to service all domestic boilers within the 52 weeks allowed by law. Some have weak systems and contractors who do not perform particularly well. Others have excellent systems. However, with the HSE in the shadows, penalties for non-compliance or failure to adequately manage risk are becoming more substantial. 84.19 Kb Download Now (as PDF) 66 Kb Download Now (as WinZip file) :: Top of page ::
CCTV & The Data Protection ActThe Data Protection Act was introduced in 1984. It contains 8 key "principles" that detail how data should be handled and processed. The 1984 Act was extended by the introduction of The Data Protection Act 1998. An important new feature of the more recent legislation, under Section 51(3)(b), is the power for The Data Protection Commissioner, now called The Information Commissioner, where the Commissioner considers it appropriate to do so, to issue codes of practice for guidance as to good practice. 95.46 Kb Download Now (PDF) 47 Kb Download Now (as WinZip file) :: Top of page ::
